National Council Tour: SITUATIONS

Join the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art's National Council for a special tour at SITUATIONS, featuring works by Memphis-born, New York-based artist Corinne Jones. 

The exhibition brings together new paintings from two ongoing series that collectively explore geometry, color, and abstraction. Works from her Casting Out Sevens series, equiluminant color fields on seven-sided canvases, appear alongside works from her Flowstone paintings, where a modular pattern of curvilinear shapes weaves and unfurls across the picture plane.

A flowstone is created by mineral deposits laid down by water, slowly, quietly, in one place, over time. Flowstone grows approximately one inch every one hundred years. In one hundred years, how many societal changes have occurred in one place? Each flowstone painting is made of modular shapes that make up figurative units of measure. They are fragments of a larger puzzle, with surfaces thickly layered and clouded by an ambiguous haze.
