Program Overview

Inspired Aging is a free multi-session studio art course for adults 55+. Courses are led by professional teaching artists who utilize the museum's collection as a stimulus for art-making experiences. Teaching artists guide participants to create artwork that will be showcased in a culminating event at the museum. These courses are designed to offer lifelong learning through the arts and serve older adults who have an interest in exploring creative expression in a social group setting. Courses are free but space is limited, so registration is required.

These free courses are made possible by the generous support of E.A. Michelson Philanthropy. Many thanks for our partners at Creative Aging and the City of Memphis Parks Senior Centers.

Art and Wellness Course

Beginners welcome! In this 8-week course participants will learn how to use art and art-making to develop a mindfulness and meditation practice. In each session, participants will view art works from the Brooks’ collection while teaching artist Paige Scheinberg provides instruction on mindfulness techniques that use art as a vehicle for self-connection. Throughout the course, participants will draw and paint a series of mandalas, an ancient art form used by Buddhist monks as a meditation aid. Final artwork will be shared in a culminating event at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art.

Classes will meet at the Brooks, 1934 Poplar Ave., on Wednesdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm on 9/13, 9/20, 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1. A culminating event will be hosted on November 11, 2023 at 2:00pm.
